Introduction

Hi!

My name is Courtney Robinson. I am a graduate student in the kinesiology program at Bowling Green State University. This is the first blog I have ever had, and I am writing it as component of a sport and society class. My posts will consist of analyses of different readings and my thoughts and personal understanding of the readings. I am very excited and slightly nervous about potentially sharing my thoughts with people across the world, although I know most of my readers will be my classmates. Since this first post is supposed to be an introduction, I guess I should give you a little more information about myself.

I was born and raised in Louisiana but my childhood consisted of several moves. Sport was always my constant when moving from place to place, and just as much of a coping mechanism as it was a competitive and recreational outlet for me. I played several sports growing up including softball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, and golf. During high school, I focused my attention on tennis and golf in hopes of receiving a college scholarship. I did receive a college scholarship but it was for playing the French horn. Yes, I am a band nerd.

I am a graduate of Louisiana Tech University where I received a degree in Health and Physical Education...GO DAWGS! It was after I took a sport and society class at Tech, that I began to think about graduate school. My search for the right program began and by luck, I found the perfect fit here at BGSU. While studying at BGSU, my concentration area is sport psychology. I do not have a topic for my thesis yet but I hope to have one soon!

Through this class, I hope to learn more about the interactions between sport and the society we live in. I truly believe sport can bring people together as athletes, fans, and communities. It is the story of the underdog that gives us hope when times are hard, the tale of a legend that reminds of greatness past, and the passion of a rising star that makes us remember why we love the game.

  1. Thank you for sharing Courtney! I think that it is awesome that sport and society class at LTU started you on your current path of study. I also think it is interesting that you spoke of sport as a copoing mechanism. I too have moved a lot throughout my life. When I started my sport, I finally found a group of friends that I felt I belong with. I still value those friendships today and keep in touch with them. So in many ways, sports do bring us together!

  2. Courtney,

Thank you for your introduction the journey your life has taken you on is amazing. I especially enjoyed your comment regarding sport being a constant stabling factor despite all your moves. Sport for me has provided an emotional release that keeps me mentally healthy. (Lol) I also enjoyed reading that you were a so called band nerd. I look forward to hearing your thoughts in class.

  4. Hi Courtney,

This is a great start to your blog. When you mentioned going to Louisiana Tech, I was reminded of seeing their women's basketball team play on national television back in about 1978. Kim Mulkey was the star point guard at the time, if I remember correctly. I think she may be the Baylor women's coach now. Were you aware of their legacy in Women's Basketball? As for the French horn, several of my brothers played that in high school as well, so I do not see it as a nerd-thing. Besides, isn't "The big bang theory" one of the top hits on tv?

I look forward to reading your subsequent entries. Great start!

  5. Courtney,
First off, I am so glad that you have come to BGSU. You definitely have found a really good fit here and I am very blessed to have gotten to know you during your time here. I only hope that our friendship continues to grow over the next year.
Second, I appreciate your band-nerdiness. I too was a band nerd in high school…
Third, I really enjoyed reading the last paragraph that you wrote in this blog. This really shows me that you are in the right field. I really look forward to reading more of your insight for this class. Maybe you can help me understand sports better since I am not very coordinated or talented. Ha ha…

  6. I don't know if Yu found out what the French horn is, but I found this clip that explains what it looks like and how to use it: http://www.ehow.co.uk/video_2389787_french-horn-tips.html
